Rules and Expectations:
The admins and moderators (identified via the "Herald of Discord" and "Knights Radiant" roles) have the final say in interpreting rules. If they post and indicate that a conversation should end, do not continue posting. If you ever have any questions or concerns about the rules or how they're being enforced, please contact one of them, who promise to listen with a fair and empathetic ear.
Be Welcoming
The Collecting Sanderson Discord and website exist to help people from around the world share in the joy of seeking out and collecting editions of Brandon's works. Activities and posts related to that are welcome on the server. Discussion and content that is unrelated is generally discouraged. The goal of the rules and expectations are to create an environment that is as welcoming and open to as many people as possible, while still maintaining focus on the core purpose of the server.
Trolling and other forms of passive aggressiveness do not contribute to a welcoming environment and are not allowed.
Language and content
Be welcoming in your language and content. While you may not have an issue with profanity and other forms of mature content, others might. Profanity is generally discouraged, but only excessive use is prohibited. Avoid posting anything that can be considered "mature" or "NSFW". If you have a very relevant and on-topic reason for posting such content, it must be posted behind spoiler tags and clearly annotated as being NSFW.
Money
Being a collector costs money. Be aware that the server represents an enormous range of income disparity, whether it's teenagers with a meager allowance, adults living paycheck-to-paycheck, or multi-millionaires. We celebrate every collecting milestone, no matter how insignificant it may seem to you. Comments that make judgements around financial security alienate people and are not welcome on the server.
- Not OK: "If you can't buy it with cash, don't bother"
- Not OK: "You don't have a 6-month emergency fund for when an Infinity Blade: Awakening pops up?!"
- OK: "You got a hardcover Rhythm of War! That's awesome, it'll look great on your shelf. Your collection is really coming along."
No Piracy
Do not offer or mention free copies of books that are supposed to be sold. Do not pass around codes for downloads of these books. Discussion of books that are supposed to be free like Aether of Night, White Sand, and the Warbreaker on Brandon's website, is totally fine. Discussion of giving codes from the secret projects kickstarter is strictly forbidden.
No Harassment
Harassment of any form is not tolerated. This includes derogatory remarks around a person’s character and/or identity. If you choose to critique something, be explicit that your critiques are a reflection of the action, and not of the person.
- Not OK: “You're dumb for paying $900 for a 1/1 Steelheart."
- Mostly OK: "It was dumb to pay $900 for a 1/1 Steelheart” (This may still be construed as a personal attack implying "you are dumb". Tone interpretation is up to the moderators' discretion)
- OK: “It was unwise to pay $900 for a 1/1 Steelheart”
No Discrimination
Discriminating on the basis of age, race, sex, gender, identity, religion, country of origin, nationality, economic situation, etc are unacceptable.
Additionally, remember that people have different opinions and preferences from you. Derogatory or inflammatory remarks are also unacceptable, even when made in jest; they often cross the line into harassment. These include topics like feelings about Moash, light mode usage, etc.
Politics, Religion, and Ethics
Avoid conversations that tend to become emotionally charged (such as conversations around real-world politics and religion), unless they explicitly refer to collecting books.
- OK: “this new law that was passed will make it harder to find an Infinity Blade: Awakening because of these reasons…”
- Not OK: “this ruling is dumb.”
- OK: "The Lord Ruler is the current leader."
- Not OK: "Vote for the Lord Ruler."
Do not encourage or advocate illegal, questionably legal, or unethical behavior.
- OK: “You can find this book cheaper at these other places”
- Not OK: “If you set up shell corporations and run the expense reports through the Caymans, you can avoid paying sales tax and get around Dragonsteel’s per-household order limit.”
Privacy
While the server is accessible to anyone willing to join and agree to the rules, you may not share personally identifiable information outside of the server without the explicit consent of everyone involved.
- OK: (posting a screenshot with names and avatars blacked out)
- Not OK: (posting a screenshot with names and avatars visible)
- OK: (posting elsewhere) “I know someone who’s selling this thing; if you’re interested, I’ll put you in touch with them”
- Not OK: (posting elsewhere) “@sandoCollector42 has this thing he’s trying to sell. Here’s their email address: …”
SCG Sales Rules
- SCG, SCG mods, and SCG admins are not liable for any unsuccessful transactions unless they are directly involved as a buyer or seller in the transaction.
- Sales posts should only include Sanderson related items. Books that do not include Brandon’s writing, art, or information are excluded. Art and other items should relate to Brandon’s works.
- ALL items in your sales post must have a price, including all fees; "make me an offer" is not acceptable, but you can use, for example, $100 or best offer.
- Sales Posts must include images of all items for sale; more pictures are encouraged.
- If selling a book, include an image of the copyright page with details such as condition, any known damage, edition, printing, remainder marks, personalization, and signatures. Seek clarification if unsure before posting.
- SCG strongly recommends using Paypal Goods & Services for transactions, especially with unfamiliar parties.
- Buyers wishing to purchase at the listed price should reply in the thread “Sold [Item name]”. The seller should proceed with the first interested party at the agreed-upon price.
- To foster transparency, we encourage all negotiations to occur in the public forum. Move to DMs only after terms are agreed upon.
- Items that were publicly released must be listed at retail price for the first six months. Afterwards, they may be listed at any price.
- Buyers should make payment within 24 hours, or the seller can proceed with another interested party.
- Sellers should ship within 3 business days of payment and provide a tracking number.
- Failure to comply with these rules may lead to the removal of your post, timeouts, and, in severe cases, bans.
